Why words are a design issue

Writer Gemma Church explains why designers and copywriters need to work together.

Designers and copywriters do not hold mutually exclusive roles. The design process needs to happen with content, not just for it. The practice of creating a page full of lorem ipsum and then just getting a copywriter to fill in the gaps does not cut it anymore.

I’ve worked as a website designer and copywriter. Many companies take a blinkered approach where each department ‘did its own thing’. Designers design websites. Writers churn out copy. Marketing department promote websites. It usually turns out a disjointed and unpleasant user experience – as well as producing a confusing and frustrating work environment.

The key factor here is effective communication. Every department has a different set of priorities and a different level of understanding. Designers discuss images, fonts and layouts. Writers worry about word choice, tone and syntax. A designer may not understand the lingo of the writer, and vice versa.

The first step is understanding each other’s worlds. If you’re a designer, take some time to read about writing styles. If you’re a writer, try to understand some of the more technical aspects of

Using in-browser editing within Adobe Muse

If you haven’t already heard, the new Adobe Creative Cloud subscription contains a powerful drag and drop website builder known as Muse CC. For graphic designers and front end developers, the appeal of Muse is a familiar Adobe canvas where custom layouts and graphics are resized, optimized and then exported to clean HTML for the web in just one click.

In just a few short years, Adobe has steadily beefed up the functionality of Muse to include parallax scrolling animation, numerous rollover and lightbox options, intuitive design tools, and an extremely useful feature known as in-browser editing. This feature allows anyone with the site’s FTP credentials to login to a web-based layout editor (even on a mobile device), make changes and publish them in minutes.

Adobe Muse and the new editing feature are best utilized within static sites for small businesses, organizations, agencies, creative and restaurants. By using in-browser editing, it’s surprisingly easy for anyone to make small changes to page elements like menu items, pricing, hours and specials.

Cursor-Over-Text Behaviour in Browsers

By default, in all major browsers, when you hover your mouse over text on a web page, the cursor changes from the regular arrow (the “default” cursor) to a “text” cursor. You can see this demonstrated in the GIF below or by simply testing it out on just about any web page:

Cursor changes fropm default to text

To be more precise, the “default” cursor is not technically required by the spec to be the default. The initial value of the cursor property is actually “auto”, meaning that, as the spec says, “the UA determines the cursor to display based on the current context.”

When defining the “text” value for the cursor property, the spec explains: “Indicates text that may be selected. Often rendered as a vertical I-beam.”

But, as you probably know, this can be overridden in CSS, so you can display whatever cursor you want, any time you want. Notice, for example, on SitePoint that the CSS is overriding the behaviour on plain text:

Cursor doesn't change

I can’t think of another site at the moment that does this no-text-cursor thing

Different Types of Web Design Layouts Available

As it is evident, a beautiful layout will surely leave a lasting impression on visitors, contributing much time in designing such a website is recommended.

Fixed Width Layout

Fixed web pages have a set width that won’t modify when the program is resized, no matter what equipment the website is generally seen on. On small devices, for instance, tablets and smart phones, content is hard to view and may be irritating for clients due to the requirement to scroll horizontally to view the rest of the content on a page, or continually ” squeeze and grow”, to zoom into the content of the page. At this point when the browser on a screen is lessened or expanded, content and pictures may break apart on the screen.

The main basic contrast between the fluid patterns and the fixed width type we have recently analyzed is the estimation of the size. The fixed width layouts are measured in pixels, yet for liquid or fluid layouts, measurements are characterized

Custom Box Packaging

The present market offers a wide range of daily use products and accessories for the consumers. Huge demand has given birth to a wider category of products too and to keep a sustainable position in the consumer market is not that easy. Greater options and possibilities lead to greater confusion on consumers’ side in term of selection of what suits them the best. In the current time, consumers don’t have time to observe deeply each and every product by opening its box and checking each and every item to get to know what it actually is. So, packaging of the product is the most important tool to market and deliver product’s efficiency.

Packaging Decides Every Thing:

Packaging has come up as an excellent tool that doesn’t even keep the product safe but also makes it more presentable and attention grabbing. There was a time when businesses didn’t need to take much care of how the product is presented. Only product meant everything. But with greater technological advancement, businesses have now to take extreme care of each and every thing that relates to the product. Hence, packaging is the most precise thing that relates to the product and the first sight on the

Your web design agency in Horsham should be able to help you achieve this.

Here are some simple things to think about when you’re planning the web design of your online shop:

3 top WordPress themes that won’t cost a penny

Tahir Taous reviews three of the most popular WordPress themes of 2015: are they worth a try?

WordPress allows you to change design of your blog easily with WordPress Themes. There are thousands of free WordPress themes and premium themes available, as well as some brilliant WordPress tutorials to help you put them into practise. You should always choose a theme which not only looks great but also fully responsive and up to date.

I like to install and test free versions of WordPress themes, and if they work well and are easy to customize, I’ll buy the pro version. Many premium themes offer 30-day money back guarantees, but I think it’s better to avoid the hassle. Simply install and test the free version and if it works well, go and buy the pro version.

Don’t miss this!

In this article I’m going to review the free versions of three of 2015’s most popular themes: ZerifLite, Customizr and Graphene. I’ve installed all these themes on my test websites with dummy content and tested how they work on desktop and mobile devices.

Frontend RSS Feeds Revisited

Back in 2008, Paul Irish posted a modest list of RSS feeds for front-end developers to follow. Since that original post, he’s updated the list multiple times, and his list is now on GitHub growing to over 200 feeds.

It looks like the list hasn’t been updated in 6 months or more. Not a really big deal, but I noticed when I imported the OPML into my feed reader, there were a number of broken feeds, empty feeds, and feeds not updated in quite some time.

For a while now I’ve wanted to put together my own list of front-end feeds, so here it is.

Some of the things I’ve focused on for this list are:

  • Not too many overly technical feeds that most of us don’t benefit much from (standards bodies, browser makers, etc.)
  • I’ve included CSS/HTML/JS category feeds for many design blogs that don’t post a lot of code. These won’t always be the most high quality feeds, but I think they have some value.
  • I’ve ensured that, as of this writing, almost all the feeds included are updated fairly regularly, or else they have been updated in the past 6 months.

If you have any suggestions for stuff to add, even if it’s

onchange vs. oninput for Range Sliders

A common UI pattern for a range slider is to allow the user to move the slider and display the value of it somewhere on the page, changing the displayed value as the user moves the slider.

I think the expected behaviour in such a case is that the value should display instantly, as the user is moving the slider, rather than the page waiting for the slider to finish moving before the displayed value is updated. I suppose there could be cases where you prefer a delay over instant results, but I think the expected behaviour is to display the results instantly.

As you’ll see in the videos below and in your own testing, the behaviour of the input event compared to the change event is not exactly the same in different browsers when applied to a range slider.

Let’s look at how these events behave in the different browsers. The code I’ll be using is embedded in the JS Bin example below:

Swap change with input to see the differences I’ll be discussing. The results described are observed on OSX and Windows 7.

Note: Opera is equivalent to Chrome in these tests because it now has the same rendering engine.
